Zhangjiang Laboratory is positioned as an interdisciplinary, comprehensive and multifunctional national laboratory, mainly relying on the photon science and technology infrastructure cluster represented by the Shanghai Light Source, and oriented to the fields of life and health sciences, integrated circuit information technology, brain-like intelligence, etc. The laboratory focuses on tackling major scientific and technological tasks and building large-scale scientific and technological infrastructure, gathering high-end scientific and technological resources at home and abroad, and carrying out strategic, forward-looking, basic, systematic and integrated scientific and technological innovation, so as to achieve new breakthroughs in the original innovation capabilities of basic science and major developments in key core technologies.

In 2020, Zhangjiang Laboratory entered a new stage of development. As a new type of scientific research institution, Zhangjiang Laboratory focuses on the country's long-term goals and major needs, and in accordance with the requirements of the "four aspects", conducts strategic, forward-looking, and basic research on major scientific issues and key core technologies; takes major scientific and technological tasks and the construction of national large-scale scientific and technological infrastructure as the main line, explores the management system and operation mechanism of new scientific research institutions, cultivates high-end innovative talents, promotes the transfer and transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and conducts exchanges and cooperation with relevant institutions and organizations at home and abroad; consciously fulfills the mission of high-level scientific and technological self-reliance and self-improvement, and strives to build a breakthrough, leading, and platform-based high-level laboratory.

In the initial stage, Zhangjiang Laboratory will carry out research layout by building large scientific facilities, tackling key directions, integrating cross-innovation, and conducting research on large scientific facilities in photon science and related basic research, tackling key research in two key directions of life science and information technology, and brain-like intelligence research in the cross-direction of life science and information technology. Zhangjiang Laboratory implements the director responsibility system under the leadership of the Management Committee, with the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as the legal entity for construction, and a number of major national scientific and technological infrastructure such as the Shanghai Light Source and the National Protein Facility (Shanghai) have all been transferred to the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for unified management.
