The Department of Orthopedics of West China Hospital of Sichuan University is one of the first national master's and doctoral degree awarding institutions and a postdoctoral mobile station. It is a key discipline of the Ministry of Education, a key clinical specialty of the Ministry of Health, an orthopedic specialist training center of the Chinese Medical Association, the office of the National Health Commission's Accelerated Rehabilitation Surgery Orthopedic Pilot Expert Group, the first batch of pilot hospitals for Accelerated Rehabilitation Surgery Orthopedics of the National Health Commission, and the National Demonstration Center for Accelerated Rehabilitation of Joint Surgery of the Chinese Medical Association. In the past five years, the Fudan University Hospital Management Institute's "China Hospital Specialty Comprehensive Ranking" has been ranked sixth, and tied for fifth in 2020; China's hospital science and technology value (STEM) ranking has been ranked first in the country, ranking third in 2018 and 2021, and the five-year total science and technology value (ASTEM) ranks second in the country in the field of orthopedics; in 2011, it won the Sichuan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Research Team; in 2021, it won the Sichuan Provincial Model Worker and Craftsman Talent Innovation Studio.
Since the first full-time orthopedic doctor was hired in West China Hospital in 1946, generations of orthopedic doctors have inherited the century-old style of West China Hospital, worked hard and made progress. At present, the orthopedics department spans 4 campuses, has 7 wards, a total of 418 beds, and the bed utilization rate has reached more than 100%. In the past five years, the average annual outpatient volume has been nearly 190,000, the inpatient volume has been nearly 15,000, and the annual surgical volume has been nearly 15,000. There are 336 people in the orthopedics department, including 103 doctors, including 26 professors, 29 associate professors, 24 doctoral supervisors, 29 master supervisors, 2 tenured professors of the hospital, 2 experts enjoying special national allowances, 20 people have engaged in postdoctoral research experience, and more than 90% of the doctors have doctoral degrees. There are 217 nurses, including 1 professor, 4 associate professors, 1 doctor, and 8 masters. They have served as chairperson, vice chairperson, standing committee member, and director in more than ten important domestic academic organizations, including the Orthopedic Branch and various academic groups of the Chinese Medical Association, the Orthopedic Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the Reconstructive Surgery Branch of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medicine Association, and the Chinese Spine and Spinal Cord Injury Committee, and have made great contributions to the academic development of orthopedics.
The Department of Orthopedics has joint reconstruction surgery center, spine surgery center, trauma orthopedic center, bone and soft tissue tumor center, sports medicine/arthroscopy center, foot and ankle center and orthopedic research institute. Each clinical center is presided over by an academic leader who enjoys a high reputation in China. Orthopedic surgery accelerated recovery, complex hip and knee replacement and revision, anterior spinal surgery, cervical disc replacement, spinal deformity correction, complex trauma emergency and functional reconstruction, bone tumor bionic personalized bio-prosthesis limb salvage, tumor prosthesis bio-prosthesis revision, knee joint multiple ligament injury dislocation reconstruction, complex foot and ankle deformity correction have a great influence; in bone and tendon tissue engineering, nerve injury repair, spinal cord injury repair, osteoporosis prevention and treatment, digital and intelligent orthopedics, etc., a number of research results with international and domestic advanced levels have been achieved.
The Department of Orthopedics has undertaken nearly 200 national and provincial scientific research projects, and has received more than 100 million yuan in scientific research funding. In the past five years, 119 scientific research projects have been approved, including 7 national major special research projects, 47 national scientific research projects, and 65 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, with a total funding of more than 60 million yuan. It has led 13 national clinical multicenter studies and participated in 10 research projects. It has published 513 SCI papers and 393 Chinese core papers as the first or corresponding author, including high-impact journals such as Lancet, Lancet oncology, Biomaterials, ACS Nano, American journal of sports medicine, Osteoarthritis and cartilage, and JBJS Am. It has won the first prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award, the third prize of the Ministry of Health Science and Technology Progress Award, and more than ten first, second, and third prizes of the Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.
Orthopedics is well-known at home and abroad for its complete discipline construction system, high-quality medical service technology, first-class teaching talent training, outstanding scientific and technological innovation capabilities, excellent regional leadership and radiation, and strong social responsibility.
