The State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology (Sun Yat-sen University) is the first State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology approved for construction in my country. The first director of the laboratory was Professor Ge Jian, and the current director is Professor Liu Yizhi. 

The National Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology was developed from the former Key Laboratories of Ophthalmology of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. In 2006 , it was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and became the only national key laboratory in the field of ophthalmology in China. Relying on the Zhongshan Eye Center of Sun Yat-sen University, which ranks first in the reputation and scientific and technological influence of Chinese hospitals in ophthalmology, the laboratory conducts applied basic, translational and clinical research on major blinding eye diseases (myopia, corneal diseases, cataracts, fundus diseases and glaucoma, etc.), and is committed to improving the level of human visual health.

The National Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology is based on Sun Yat-sen University, and the laboratory is located in the Sun Yat-sen University Zhongshan Eye Center.

The laboratory has set the goal of building a world-class ophthalmology laboratory. In accordance with the requirements of "openness, mobility, cooperation, and competition", it will further refine research directions, attract and cultivate talents, build an international team, improve working conditions, coordinate basic and clinical research, strictly regulate management, and create a research atmosphere that is innovative, inclusive, and collaborative.

In recent years, we have made work with global influence: the original research results on human lens regeneration were rated as one of the eight major breakthroughs in global medicine in 2016 ; the results of myopia prevention and control have received attention and instructions from the leaders of the Party and the country, and have been included in the Global Myopia Prevention and Control Blue Book by the World Health Organization; the world's first artificial intelligence cataract diagnosis and treatment cloud platform was built, and was selected by IEEE Spectrum as one of the " 11 major AI events affecting the global medical community " in 2017 ; clinical research changed the treatment plan for high-risk groups for glaucoma, and won the first major Chinese medical progress in 2020; as the first signing unit corresponding author, we published original papers in Nature, Lancet, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communication, Science Advances and other journals. Practicing the responsibility of a major country and the concept of "human health community", we cooperated with the World Health Organization to carry out the "Solving the Need for Eye Health Services at the National Level" project to provide eye health services to less developed countries; international medical assistance work was written into the Chinese Diplomatic History by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Asia-Pacific Association of Ophthalmology (APAO) headquarters is permanently located here. The laboratory's international status has been greatly enhanced, and it has become one of the world's most influential bases for ophthalmic scientific research, talent training, academic exchanges, and achievement transformation.
