The Department of Gastroenterology at West China Hospital of Sichuan University is a well-known digestive system disease diagnosis and treatment center in Southwest China and even in China, and is famous for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal, liver, and gallbladder and pancreatic diseases. The Department of Gastroenterology is a national key discipline and a key clinical specialty of the Ministry of Health. It has 55 doctors, including 10 doctoral supervisors and 9 master's supervisors, as well as 32 doctors with senior professional titles, and a nursing team of 105 people.

The department has several sub-specialty groups, including liver disease group, pancreatic and biliary disease group, inflammatory bowel disease group, gastrointestinal bleeding group, endoscopic minimally invasive treatment group and digestive interventional treatment group, etc. The outpatient volume reaches more than 160,000 person-times per year. The digestive endoscopy center is equipped with the world's most advanced electronic endoscopy equipment, and more than 120,000 gastroscopy, colonoscopy and other examinations and treatments are performed each year.

The Department of Gastroenterology is in the leading position in China in terms of endoscopic minimally invasive treatment technology, and has carried out projects including endoscopic treatment of early gastrointestinal cancer (EMR, ESD), digestive endoscopy combined with surgical laparoscopy, thoracoscopic resection of giant gastrointestinal tumors, endoscopic hemostasis of massive gastrointestinal bleeding, ERCP and related treatments. In addition, it has also carried out a number of digestive vascular and non-vascular interventional diagnosis and treatment technologies, such as minimally invasive interventional treatment of diseases such as liver cirrhosis, Budd-Chiari syndrome, digestive system tumors, gastrointestinal bleeding, refractory ascites, and obstructive jaundice, among which TIPS technology is at the leading level in China.

In recent years, the Department of Gastroenterology has undertaken a number of national scientific research projects, including more than 20 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, key projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and international cooperation, and has won 6 provincial and ministerial scientific research achievement awards. More than 200 papers have been published in domestic and foreign academic journals, of which more than 60 have been included in SCI, including articles published in international authoritative journals such as "Gastroenterology", "Gut", "Gastrointestinal Endoscopy", "Radiology", and "Endoscopy". The Department of Gastroenterology has also edited more than 10 monographs, dedicated to applying new scientific research results to clinical practice and serving the majority of patients.

Since its establishment in 1964, the Department of Gastroenterology has developed into a comprehensive clinical department with advanced equipment, a good team of talents, advanced diagnosis and treatment techniques, and comprehensive strength at the leading level in the country through the efforts of several generations.
