The Psychiatry Research Laboratory of West China Hospital of Sichuan University is a professional laboratory focusing on basic and clinical research on the pathogenesis of mental illness. It was established in 1995, became a key laboratory of Sichuan Province in 2001, and became an important part of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy of Sichuan University in 2005. The laboratory has more than 350 square meters of experimental space and is equipped with more than 80 sets of experimental equipment, including 60 imported equipment, which can meet the needs of cell biology and molecular biology experiments, and also supports experiments such as small animal behavior testing and brain stereotaxic positioning.

The laboratory has more than 20 years of experience in the study of genetic pathology of mental illness, and has established a biological sample library covering depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and other mental illnesses, covering nearly 10,000 samples per person. The research team is committed to exploring the pathogenesis of common mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bipolar disorder.

In terms of scientific research, the Psychiatry Research Laboratory has undertaken a number of national scientific research projects, including key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, key projects of the National 13th Five-Year Plan, outstanding youth funds, general projects, etc., and has achieved remarkable scientific research results, publishing more than 100 SCI papers. In recent years, the laboratory platform construction and talent training have achieved remarkable results, and the scientific research funds have exceeded 10 million yuan.

The research direction of the Psychiatric Laboratory is condensed into the construction of three key platforms: neural/stem cell biology platform, small molecule drug development platform for mental illness, and animal model platform for mental illness. The purpose is to use these platforms to conduct in-depth research on the pathogenesis of mental illness, develop new therapeutic drugs, and promote the clinical application of research results.
